One of my most indelible book memories is receiving a copy of Edith Hamilton’s Mythology together with the first issue of Mighty Mouse published by Marvel Comics. I was sick in bed and my mother had gone on a grocery trip to the Tropical Hut Supermarket along Panay Avenue. Then as now, no trip to the grocery would have been complete without passing by the National Bookstore across the street.
So when my mom got home she handed the books to me. It was a nice surprise because she wasn’t one to buy me books on a whim. Maybe that was why the memory stayed with me so long.
Of course she didn’t know that Hamilton’s Mythology, which was brimming with stories of violence, betrayal and death would actually even be more depressing to a sick boy. But that’s another story.
